Head-up displays (HUDs) are information displays that are projected into the user’s or wearer’s field of vision to allow a seamless superimposition of relevant operational information and real-world elements. These displays, which first found use in fighter planes during World War II, have expanded their applications to include commercial jets and automobiles, and are increasingly found in recreation, industry, and public safety.
According to a new report from Tractica, cumulative worldwide shipments of HUDs will reach 182.9 units during the period between 2015 and 2025. The market intelligence firm forecasts that annual HUD shipments will increase from 2.7 million units in 2015 to 36.0 million by 2025, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 29.6%. These volumes will create an annual market of $13.1 billion by the end of the forecast period.
“The head-up display market will experience strong growth over the next few years due to the convergence of several key factors,” says principal analyst Keith Kirkpatrick. “Innovations in other technology sectors have led to the development of more advanced technological capabilities, often in smaller, lower-cost, and more power-efficient form factors. In addition, consumers have become accustomed to having access to information at their fingertips, thanks to the ubiquity of smartphones, and are seeking similar levels of connectivity and information in their vehicles, at work, and at play.”
Kirkpatrick adds that the two largest application markets for HUDs will be the automotive and wearable segments, but there will continue to be niche markets for HUDs in maritime applications, and steady usage of HUDs in the aerospace market, where the technology got its start.
